Our Governors and Trustees
The Frewen Educational Trust Limited
Chairman: John Maudslay
John has been a Governor for ten years, and our Chairman since 2002. He has held a variety of posts in companies in the Lloyd’s insurance market, where he has worked since 1975. He lives nearby in Beckley with his wife Alex and three children, and is a regular visitor to the school.
Vice Chairman: Jonty Driver (F&GP, Academic)
Master of Wellington College from 1989-2000, Jonty is a poet, novelist and essayist. Educated at Cape Town and Oxford Universities, he was President of the National Union of South African Students (1963-64) and detained by the security police for his anti-apartheid activities. This has not deterred a number of other prestigious schools appointing him as a Governor, including Benenden, Millfield, Milton Abbey and Farlington. He is an honorary Senior Lecturer in the School of Literature and Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia.John Hamer (Academic)
A highly respected educational consultant, author and former HM Inspector of Schools, among many public appointments John was the first Education Policy Advisor to the Heritage Lottery Fund, and is a consultant to the Council of Europe. Educated at Durham, Oxford and London Universities, John is a Special Lecturer in the School of Education at Nottingham University, Chairman of the Heritage Education Trust and governor of two other schools.
Anne Moore-Bick (Marketing, Pastoral)
Anne has 30 years experience as a Services parent, and has considerable knowledge of the welfare needs of Services families. She is current Chairman of SSAFA Forces Help, Sussex Branch.
Graham Peters (F&GP)
Graham is an experienced local businessman with an active interest in rural and community regeneration. His wife Sarah kindly acts as the Independent Visitor for the boarding house.
Alison Steven (Marketing, Pastoral)
Alison is an Assistant Head and Head of Boarding at nearby Benenden School. She provides valued advice on boarding and school policies.
John Stevenson (F&GP)
John is a highly experienced barrister, called to the bar in 1975. He “has great intellectual depth and is a superb advocate and negotiator.” (The Lawyer)
Jo Slater
(Pastoral)
Jo works as an independent counsellor/psychotherapist mainly within the NHS. Before this, she worked for Berkshire Education Department as a Senior Practitioner in child mental health services.
Jo has some nineteeen years experience of living and working in boarding
schools; as wife to a housemaster, later to become headmaster.
Outside work, she is actively involved in drama and music in East Kent.

Philip Noel
After 25 years in the insurance industry, Philip is now a partner in a West End theatre production company which specialises in plays, cabaret and children's theatre. He was a Governor of Farleigh School, an independent preparatory school in Hampshire, between 1992 and 2004 and is currently advising Ampleforth College in North Yorkshire on redevelopment of their school theatre. We have high hopes for our future end of term productions!
