Planning

Schemes of work

Medium term planning in the form of a scheme of work provides the foundation of the departmental planning system. The scheme of work has been written taking into account the National Curriculum as well as the attainment and ability levels of the students in our care. The scheme of work is a working document and is reviewed annually. These medium term plans are used to inform weekly planning.

Weekly plans

Weekly plans are written in one of two ways by class teachers for each year group. As such they vary from class to class, as they take into account the needs of the individual students within the different groups. Planning is broken down into individual lessons and these are further split into three separate sections. This is either written into the teacher’s planner or using the Maths Department weekly planning sheets.

Opportunities for 'over learning' and a variety of styles of teaching and learning are considered when transferring learning objectives from the scheme of work to the weekly lesson plans. Class teachers consider the strengths and weaknesses of their students when planning lessons and individual activities, thus providing the optimum teaching and learning situations for the students in their care. The outcome from individual lessons is then assessed by the teacher, taking into account work produced, discussions undertaken and student self-assessment. The class teacher will make a judgement as to whether or not the learning objective was met during the lesson. These lesson assessments are then used to inform future planning.
