ICT

Information & Communication Technology (ICT) Department

The ICT facilities at Frewen College are excellent. The two ICT teaching suites are all fully equipped with networked computers, with access to colour laser printing facilities, broadband Internet access and a host of relevant software applications. Each suite is equipped with an interactive whiteboard.

Our aim for ICT in the curriculum is to:

  • Enable pupils to be confident and effective users of ICT.
  • Support, enhance and extend learning opportunities for our pupils through ICT.
We strive to achieve this aim by:
  • Helping all pupils to use ICT with purpose and enjoyment.
  • Meeting the requirements of the national curriculum as fully as possible and helping all pupils to achieve the highest possible standards of achievement.
  • Helping all pupils to develop the necessary skills, principles, methods and terminology to exploit ICT resources and tools.
  • Helping all pupils to work effectively with others and to become autonomous users of ICT.
  • Helping all pupils to develop critical awareness in order to evaluate the benefits of ICT and its impact on society.
  • Ensuring pupils use and gain experience of ICT in a variety of subject areas and contexts.
  • Ensuring pupils use ICT tools and information sources for a range of investigations, research, problem solving and system design activities.
  • Assessing & monitoring pupils’ progress to ensure continuity and progression
  • Providing and maintaining appropriate ICT equipment and software.

Key Stage 3 and 4

ICT is offered to all Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 pupils as a subject in its own right.

Key Stage 3: all pupils have two periods of ICT per week. ICT teaching groups are small enough to guarantee each pupil access to their own computer during lessons.

Key Stage 4: all pupils have a minimum of three ICT lessons per week.

As from September 2008, Year 10 started the OCR Nationals at Level 2 instead of OCR GCSE. This has been put in place after careful consideration of the needs and particular strengths of the pupils in this subject.

OCR Nationals are an exam-free alternative to GCSEs, taking a more engaging, practical approach to learning and assessment. Assessment is based on what is produced by the student in his/her portfolio, such as the two brochure projects attached as pdf files below.

The National First Award in ICT helps prepare candidates for a world increasingly dominated by the use of ICT systems, particularly the workplace.
The qualification has three levels:
  •   Pass: equivalent to one C at GCSE
  •   Merit: equivalent to one B at GCSE
  •    Distinction: equivalent to one A at GCSE
Studying this course will help provide the communication and technical skills that are needed by active participants in this exciting and dynamic world. It develops the use of e-mail, presentation, publication and spreadsheet software to complete the assignment. The course will provide an essential foundation in ICT skills.

It also provides a springboard to further courses specific to the use of computers and new technology such as AS or Advanced GCE, vocational and occupational courses.
