Art and Design

Art Department

Our Art Department is headed by Clive Garland, formerly Senior Lecturer at Camberwell College of Art, and a distinguished Artist in his own right who has exhibited at Tate Britain. He is very ably assisted by his wife Mary Garland, who is also responsible for all displays within the senior school.

Years 7 & 8

Years 7/8 follow the simple structure set out below giving students a variety of subjects in each category to explore in a personal way. The teaching is holistic. Each student is geared to approach every subject in an individual and personal way using appropriate media to express their ideas.

Years 9, 10 & 11

In years 9, 10 and 11 the emphasis is on the student generating and taking control of their ideas with help and guidance from the staff, building upon individual interest which may stem from activities outside the school, to subjects explored from their imagination or individual research.

Year 9

The programme aims to improve and develop observation using a creative approach, in order to give a foundation of basic skills and knowledge. Through the experimentation of a variety of media, the outcome will vary from 2D to 3D. This year the aim is to work towards a more independent approach, generating and producing ideas that will ultimately form the basis of a GCSE programme next year.

DrumsYear 10

The programme aims to improve and develop creativity and visual understanding. Recording observations, together with continual analysis and evaluation in the sketchbook, and developing ideas, will lead the student to form the all important personal response. Through the experimentation of a variety of media the outcome will vary from 2D to 3D. This is the first year of the two-year GCSE and the aim is to start and complete two units of practical coursework during that time.
