Principal's Welcome

Nick GoodmanWelcome to Frewen College!

As the new Principal, I am delighted to welcome you to Frewen College - a unique school for children of all abilities, between the ages of 7 and 18, who suffer from Dyslexia and other related speech and language disorders.

Frewen’s roots go back over 100 years, making it one of the oldest, if not the oldest, such schools in the world.

At the centre of the school is Brickwall House, a seventeenth century manor house, once home to the Frewen family. The grounds, including walled gardens and farmland, extend to 100 acres. As you will see from the photographs, the school’s situation provides a calm and peaceful environment in which children achieve success in their learning.

The total number of pupils at Frewen is currently just over 100 – boys and girls, boarding and day pupils, with a small number from overseas. The school has a friendly, family feel, and the pupils are courteous and cheerful. In our most recent Ofsted Standard Inspection Report, inspectors judged the pupils’ behaviour to be “outstanding”, and commented on the school’s “highly appropriate focus on the pupils’ specific learning difficulties”.

Dyslexia can affect children of all abilities, and we are committed to ensuring that every pupil, irrespective of their ability or the severity of their disability, achieves the highest level of success possible. This is achieved through a thorough assessment of each child’s needs, individual support, in small classes, supplemented where appropriate with one to one tuition or therapy, the setting of ambitious but achievable expectations, the careful tracking of progress and the provision of quality feedback.

The staff at Frewen are highly experienced in working with children with specific learning difficulties, and most have dyslexia qualifications. Where necessary, they are supported in their work by a specialist team of therapists and mentors.

The school is divided into three parts: The Prep School, which has grown considerably in recent years, the well-established Senior School, and our latest addition, the Sixth Form, which we are running in conjunction with our partner establishments Bexhill College and Plumpton College. We begin the new school year with the first year of the Sixth Form fully subscribed, and anticipate even greater demand for places next year, which will enable us to extend the range of courses still further.

Further details regarding the Prep, Senior School and Sixth Form can be found on the relevant pages of this website.

Choosing the right school is a great responsibility, and I hope this website will provide much valuable information to help you decide whether Frewen is right for your child. If you have any questions, or require any further details, or would like to visit the school and see it for yourself, please do not hesitate to contact me, or my PA Annabel Edwards, and we will be more than happy to be of assistance.

Our open morning dates are shown on the News and Calendar pages, but if you think Frewen may be the right school for your child and you don’t want to wait, do feel free to get in touch straight away.

I look forward to hearing from you.
